Are you scrambling to get your family’s Christmas card ready like we are? Our friend and blogging phenom, Jill over at One Good Thing by Jillee asked Small Fry editor and resident photographer, Nicole to write up some tips on getting the best from your family photoshoot, or even just taking photos on the fly day-to-day. You can read the tips here. Jill and Small Fry have teamed up to giveaway two readers (one commenter at Jill’s site and one here) their pick of their favorite memory capturing device: be it the Canon Rebel and our favorite 50mm lens, or an iPhone 5! We love Nicole’s tips, because it’s easy to over think it when usually the best photos are the ones where we’re not thinking at all, just being ourselves.

Here are some of the photos Nicole snapped to go along with her tips, aren’t they beautiful?

Now, we’ve all had our turn with a DSLR and they are absolutely worth the effort, but if you’re looking to just shoot from the hip, literally, the iPhone is a wonderful option. With an eight pixel camera built right in, you’ll be getting gorgeous photos all the time with minimal effort. Here are some of our favorite photo applications for our iPhones, if you need a starting point!

    Hi! I always had trouble smiling a nice smile. One year, while on holiday in Italy, someone took a picture of me while I was having ice cream. I said ‘gelatiiiii’ and a really nice picture was the result! So, now I always say gelati and it works! I gave this tip to other people as well and they use it now too.

    I would pick the iPhone 5. My son is leaving VERY soon for basic training for the USAF and his old phone is really beyond its life limit and is literally falling apart. Having this for him would make it much easier to keep in touch after he finishes training and goes on to Tech School (and when he gets stationed who know where!).

    Honestly, I would be happy to win either the phone or the camera. But if I had to pick, I’d chose the phone and give it to my dad for his birthday on 12-13. My parents have the 4s but I have an Android phone that talks the GPS directions and they constantly complain that their phone doesn’t talk the directions but they can’t afford to get a new one.

    I’m not too sure if the winners are selected at random or by your interests in response, but here I go…

    Ever since I picked up my first point and shoot camera during my Freshmen year of high school, I have been reluctantly unable to stop snapping. 7 years later (wow), I’m up late trying to get school assignments dealt with and I see Small Fry’s Instagram post… this has to be my chance to grab that Canon Rebel!

    My daughter’s 1st birthday party’s quickly approaching (December 15th) and not only would I love to capture her big moment with awesome photos, but it’s one of my many intentions as a parent to introduce and influence her upbringing with photography.

    This giveaway is fabulous! As I mentioned on Instagram, my preference would be the Canon Rebel because 1) it’s awesome, 2) I want to make everyday weirdo things look awesome through a lens, 3) I am revamping my biz website and will be needing high-quality images that I’d prefer taking (and saving money on), 4) I think my daughter is beautiful and need to capture that 100% of the time with this camera, and lastly, 5) I want to start a blog (yeah, 20 years too late to the game) and would love this type of camera for the images! Advice get on the same level as kids or pets and use a separate lens that allows you to shoot from far away allowing your subjects to think they r not being photographed. This allows you to get the best candid pictures and take you camera every where you never will know when you have the opportunity to take great pictures.

I love taking photos of beautiful places and interesting things when traveling. Unfortunately, all the photos I had are on a digital camera (not my phone), so I had to borrow one from the internet to use but this is the type of thing I love to take pictures of.

Only because my adorable, precious 15 month old whom I love so dearly took the camera charger with the battery in it out of the plug where it was charging and walked away with it. It has been 4 months(and he is now 19 months old) and the camera battery has not been found. Every picture I take is with my phone.

      I would definitely choose the camera. I have a Canon Rebel already (actually 2) but I am really trying to get my daughter who’s 16 to realize how good she is at taking pictures. She really has an eye for it and I would love to see her become a photographer. I think giving her a camera like this just might get her excited and inspire her to go for it. She’s so afraid of all the competition that she talks herself out of it. Playing around with a semi professional camera may help her to gain her confidence.

    I never take actual black and white photos. Take the picture as a color photo and you can always have b&w pictures printed or, using you smartphone and a great app, transform the picture while saving the original color photo. You never know what “extras” you capture with both features.
