Easter is really throwing us off this year falling on the last day of March! It’s creeping right up on us, but thankfully our friend Anna Liesemeyer of In Honor Of Design is on the ball!
Anna is a mother of two (with a soon to be hatched third!) who works from home as a graphic designer and lifestyle blogger in Atlanta, GA. If she’s not getting into messes with her kids, she is getting into her own creative messes! We love her idea to make your own dip-dye tote bag just in time for your next Easter egg hunt! We love it because while it feels perfectly Springish and hunt-ready, you can use it all year round!
Here’s how she did it:
Materials Needed:
Liquid or Powder Rit dye in two tones per bag
Canvas Totes in any size (bought both sizes
here)
Washtub or large container
Preparation:
This is a great project to start with if you have never died any fabric. You can pick up the powder or liquid version of Rit dye (Anna used both!) in two monochromatic tones. Also grab a washing tub or large container to dip dye them in. When you are only dying a small quantity of fabric, you don’t need much dye. Follow Rit-dye instructions or use a 1/4 of the liquid bottle per gallon of hot water (depending how strong you want the color to be).
Instructions:
Fill your tub with a gallon of hot water, add the liquid or powder dye in your lighter tones first.
Fully submerge your tote and stir every few minutes for 10-15 minutes total. Rinse thoroughly and hang to dry.
Once fully dry you can dip the tote half way in and let hang over the side of the tub to soak the bottom half for another ten minutes. Rinse and let dry.
For the last dip, fill your tub with hot water and the darker color. Dip the bottom part of the tote into the dye bath and soak for 5-10 minutes. Rinse and then dry.
Make sure to wear gloves or use tongs during the process!
Thanks Anna, we can hardly wait to see these darling totes in action! To check out more of Anna’s work, visit IHOD blog or instagram @inhonorofdesign.
