An Honest Camp Out

This post is brought to you by The Honest Company.

When Honest (keep reading for a coupon code for Small Fry readers!) approached us about going on a Summer adventure with some of their new products, our first thought was camping! We’ve been wanting to go on a Small Fry family camping trip since Spring but one thing we always seem to forget hit us, camping is a LOT of work! With six kids under four we may not be in the camping season of our lives but we decided we would give it a shot anyway. So we decided to try out a camping dry run, to see if we had what it takes.

We had a few ideas for what a dry run of camping would entail, but ultimately we wanted to see how our boys would respond. We put Jenna and her crew on over night duty and we all tried out the new line. Honest knocked it out of the park! Here’s a quick review:

Their hand sanitizer spray is our new must-have. The fine mist spritz is a definite upgrade from the usual gels we use. It dries quickly, moisturizes and has no chemicals and smells great! Not to mention a vital addition to the dirt and bacteria that comes with being in nature!

Their bug spray is another wonder, again being chemical free and using essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances. It lasts up to four hours and fights mosquitoes and other insects.

Their sunscreen is great for camping, and all-day activities, and it’s natural and also safe as can be for babies! Honest wrote an awesome post on sunscreen and babies right here.

Being out in nature can be really harsh on your skin. With the sun, the uneven terrain, and all the new plants and trees we were happy to find their healing balm is so moisturizing and soothing! It’s recipe can cure a diaper rash, and other minor irritations,  but is nondescript enough to use from head to toe.

Now that we were armored with the right products we put Jenna’s family to the test, as they are the most outdoorsy of the crew, and they lasted until about 1:30 am when they found their way back to their warm beds. A for effort! Here are our notes from our Dry Run Camp-out:

1. Pitch the tent. Make sure you know what you’re doing before you go. Try it out when there is less pressure. Putting it together for the first time  in the hot sun three hours from home while everyone’s whining is a recipe for frustration. You also never know who will have the most tent-building finesse. Nicole put it together in a mere few minutes, hidden talents!

2. Cook the food. This goes mostly for those of us with small kids, but sometimes you just never know what they’ll eat. While we all look forward to a good dutch oven peach cobbler and tin foil dinners, making sure your kids like it too is vital! It’s nice to know ahead of time that you’ll need a way to make a campfire quesadilla.

3. Explore! Part of the camping appeal is to truly enjoy nature. Sometimes we have to consciously engage our kids into adventure mode, to become explorers. We brought out our trusty nature hunt scavenger printable, binoculars, and walking sticks and turned the back yard into a little piece of the woods.

4. Get rid of expectations. It’s just an experiment, so enjoy it! If your kids aren’t the camping type, they may be next year. Even a dry run of camping created lots of fun memories for us and our kids, and that’s all that matters, right?

So readers, would you call yourself the camping type? Is it on your Summer to-do list and what successful tips do you have for us with small kids? Happy “Camping!”
