warm coats & cool dads

When Ugg Australia approached us about testing out their new Fall ’12 line of coats and using them to chronicle “A Day in the Life of a Cool Kid”, we figured anything and everything our boys know about being cool comes from their dads!  So now is the time to finally introduce them to you. We do all our Small Frying while they’re busy at work, which is why they haven’t made their debuts until now, but don’t let their absence fool you. These daddios are the center of our boys’ universes and we love them loads as well.

Dane, a junior loan officer by day, snow and skateboard nut by night. [With Nicole, Dash and Sunny.]

Russ owns a construction company, lives for baseball and loves working on his ’67 Bronco. [With Emily, Hayes and Callum.]

Andrew is an adrenaline junkie that loves rock climbing, skiing, and anything else that terrifies the rest of us, all while running a home security system business. [With Jenna, Quinn and Jude.]

The best part about these husbands of ours are that no matter what they’re into, when they walk in the door it’s all about family. But, you can bet that they’ll have these boys on the slopes, at the half-pipe, and hurdling seats to catch a fly ball at the baseball field in no time.

Thank you to Ugg Australia for gifting us these incredible coats. We picked the Crazy Horse II in black and indigo and they are top quality and fit incredibly well. We love that the sleeves and hood zip off to make it work in three different ways.

from head to toe: Kmart

Here’s some tips for scouting a head to toe look at Kmart:

They have great “two for” deals, meaning you can get great basics at a low cost. For example, Gracie below is wearing a grey tee that is in a mix and match with other basics colors like white and black, 2 for $7! Kmart also had darling denim with a sparkly tuxedo stripe down the sides, in grey and dark blue 2 for $12. Throwing in a cute wintry vest, and $8 rain boots and you’ve got a whole outfit for under $25.

For Hayes, Kmart boy’s section has so many great basics like plaid pearl snap button-downs, cute long sleeve waffle tees (this one has robots on skateboards!) and the pants are a breathable chino material from the girl’s section. If you remember our shoe upgrade post from a few months ago, you know we love the Joe Boxer sneaker line. Kmart usually has the Joe Boxer sneakers on a “two for” deal as well so you’re getting them for less than $5 a piece!

All in all Kmart has some great basics at unbelievably low prices, definitely worth a stop in!

head to toe: zara

Zara is a Spanish company that has brick and mortar stores throughout the world and several places in the U.S., but it wasn’t until last year that they opened up their online shop to the masses in America. We are so glad they did! We love their clothing for ourselves and their kids line is so great. You can find lots of pieces at an incredibly reasonable price point (think $12 for t-shirts) and there are more expensive higher quality items too. Our favorite part about Zara is their super speedy free shipping; 2-4 days with hassle free returns? Doesn’t get easier than that!

my mum’s threads no. 2 [giveaway closed]

Congrats to Jamie Worall, Danielle, and Madison the 3 winners of this giveaway!

For our second installment of My Mum’s Threads we have brought together some of our favorite things: local boutique Koo De Ker, fashion blogger and mama to the darling Hanes, Cara Loren, and free clothes for our dear readers!

Koo De Ker had Cara and Small Fry over to shop their amazing new Fall line and put together mum approved ensembles. Cara hunted down the perfect pieces that suited her edgy style and would also keep up with any adventures she and Hanes encountered.
Mums Threads Cara 2Koo De Ker is the perfect combination of on-trend and well tailored clothing. Everything is brought in with the woman’s body in mind, their shop is chalk full of special and unique pieces, the kind that people will stop you in the street demanding to know where you got them. Here’s what Cara had to say about her Koo De Ker picks.
Look No. 1: As a mom I am always looking for something that I can chase Hanes in easily but also look fab while doing it. I chose this maxi skirt because I can never pass on a comfortable/chic maxi skirt, and paired it with this oversized cropped sweater for the the perfect fall look. The sweater had the leather detail which is always my favorite, it gives me that edge that I am always looking for. And of course I had to pair it with this cheetah infinity scarf, I mean does it get any better than that?

Look No. 2: This tribal cardigan is the perfect piece to throw on while running out the door. You can put it with about anything and look like you have it all together. Which lets be honest, what mom really does?!

Look No. 3: The second I walked in Koo De Ker I saw this leather sleeved letterman and new I had to have it. I’m pretty sure when Hanes is ten he’ll think I’m pretty cool for wearing it too. Oh and the black fur vest over top? It’s a must!

Look No. 4: Let’s not forget this perfect tan wrap coat! I knew I liked it, but once I put it on I fell in love!! It was the perfect fit and that fall/winter piece that we all need. Not to mention it’s ideal for little Hanes to cuddle with me in. I may finally be the favorite!

Cara is a wonderful mom, so dedicated to her little boy, and still manages to look amazing and put together in any situation. Koo De Ker wants us all to have the perfect pieces that make us feel and look like a million bucks, so KDK is making it happen for you!

my mum’s threads no.1

We just had our one month anniversary here at Small Fry and, how rude of us, we haven’t formally introduced ourselves! You can read more about each of us here at our “Who’s In Charge Here” page, but what’s more telling than our go-to Mamattire? The things we throw on without thinking, feel great in, and can tackle our days no matter what’s on the agenda.

Emily's Mamattire

Emily:

I wear a messy top-knot more often than I care to admit, but it works for me! I love to have warm accessories on hand that are easy to take on and off to accommodate the bi-polar Fall temperatures. After having two babies sixteen months apart, I like to hide my post-baby-baby tummy with loose fitting tops, and always have a hair elastic close by on my wrist. These black waxed denim trousers look like leather, giving me an edge, but move like leggings. These moccasins are perfectly comfortable, slip on and off, and can take a beating, which I love!

Jenna's Mamattire

Jenna:

Don’t roll your eyes, but I am an eyelash extension loyalist. That extra expense saves me so much time and money because I don’t feel like I need any other makeup! A swipe of bronzer and thick batting lashes are all a girl needs! For the rest of the ensembles I love a crisp button-down and a warm top layer like this cardigan, a jean jacket, or a wool coat. The button-down allows for some room to breathe right after a baby, is perfect to nurse in, and while I am neither of those things anymore, it’s a versatile blouse that grows with you!  I love a good pop of color and these cropped jeans are heavy in the rotation. I am in flats for every occasion, and classic ballet flats make me feel instantly chic and put together.

Nicole's Mamattire

Nicole:

My perfect fall look is usually a combination of the following: the Tippi sweater, in every color, is so well-made it doesn’t bunch, ball, or puddle. It looks polished all day long and the 3/4 sleeve is so slimming and feels just a hint more formal so I can go from the playground to a nice dinner with ease. My go-to accessories are a sleek watch to keep this mum prompt, and some dangling earrings. I love the printed pants trend and how much interest it adds to a simple outfit, and you can’t beat the versatility of a good leather sandal. Easy to kick on and off, so it doesn’t get in the way of wrestling with my boys or leaving the dust and dirt of the day on the porch.

Series Submissions:

If you’d like to submit a picture of your own Mamattire to Small Fry, email us at hello (at) smallfryblog (dot) com. Include 1-3 photos, outfit credits, and some info on why it’s your go-to and you could be featured here or on our Facebook page!

from head to toe: gap

Gap is such a staple for kid’s clothing. Great quality, and promotions and sales virtually every week. If money was endless, we could build great wardrobes for the whole family solely from Gap. To us, they excel especially at cold weather pieces. They really think about form and function for those of us who have to bundle our kids up.

Here’s a look at some of our favorite cold weather pieces:

from head to toe: wal mart

From Head to Toe takes Wal-Mart! Wal-Mart is about as inexpensive as you’re going to find for new kids clothes. We (and our boys) are easily overwhelmed by the magnitude of the store and don’t go too often, but when we do there are usually several must-grab items. They have a super soft newborn and infant basics line that is mix and match and so nice to stock up on, and of course check out what we picked up below!

from head to toe: old navy + giveaway [closed]

This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Megan!

Since launching Small Fry, our number one request has been for more fashion posts! We love dressing our boys and find a lot of joy and satisfaction in the process. While the boys are usually wearing a number of brands at once, for this new series, we wanted to show a head to toe look from one store at a time. Some inexpensive, some higher quality. Some big box stores, and some small and intimate boutiques. And of course, we’ll be showing an outfit for the little ladies too. For our first post of the weekly series we chose Old Navy. It is a wonderfully inexpensive option that stays on top of trends and always has a lot of fun options for both boys and girls. Would you like $100 to shop Old Navy? Keep reading…

Dash for under $40:

Hazel for under $60:One tip that we all live by is to shop in every department, most of our boys pants are from the girl’s department, and the boy’s section usually has great tees, sweaters and cardigans that would look darling on a little girl. Another great thing about Old Navy is there is virtually always a promotional sale going on either in-store or online, and markdowns happen every quarter.

Maybe the best thing of all are Old Navy Gift Cards, are we right? If you’d like $100 to shop Old Navy, leave a comment below! The winner will be chosen next Thursday October 18th, at 5:00 am MST.

For extra entries:

1. Follow Small Fry on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and/or Pinterest.

shoe upgrade

Here at Small Fry, we all have two boys each, isn’t that something? We’re not sure if girls are the same, but boys are so hard on their clothes. On top of that they grow like weeds, and we are replenishing their too small wardrobes monthly it seems. So when we find inexpensive staples, we like to stock up. But, of course three best friends with six boys between us, the boys are constantly matching. Embellishing these inexpensive finds is the perfect way to put a little individuality back into their wardrobes. Here’s how Emily did it:

Painted Shoes

Using painter’s tape, mark off your desired design. Make sure you press the tape into the creases and that it is adhering, duct tape might work well too! Using our favorite go-to, acrylic paint, and a sponge brush, dab the paint into the design. Depending on the saturation of the paint and the shoe’s material, you will probably need a few coats. But, it dries quickly, so once it’s set, remove the tape. In only minutes you’ll have one-of-a kind shoes.

Slip ons via K-Mart, and shorts are thrifted Wranglers cut off above the knee.

If you upgrade any shoes, link in the comments, we’d love to see!

And can we just say we hope you have the happiest weekend! It has been an incredible week for Small Fry, and we are on cloud nine. The morning we launched the site was taking minutes to load because so many of you were here. We were laughing because while you were reading our motto, we were either scolding or ignoring our kids while we frantically tried to troubleshoot. We are doing this for our boys, and to be better mothers, but we are definitely not perfect. While we work out the kinks in life and online, we hope you know how much we value and appreciate your support. We hope that we can show you even an ounce of what we’ve felt in return.
