hoping to adopt: the harding family

adoptionweekIt all started over 7 years ago.  A girl was sitting in the living room of an apartment in a little college town waiting for the brother-in-law of her best friend to show up for a blind date.  Finally – almost 45 minutes late – he walked through the door, looked at the girl and never looked away.

Hey there!  Was that sappy enough for you? 🙂

We’re Missy and Brad.  We were married 5 months to the day after that first blind date and we’ve been having a blast ever since.  We’ve lived from coast to coast. Literally – San Francisco when we were first married to Boston currently, and a few other places in between. We enjoyed the adventures but it feels nice to be settled.

We had always wanted a large family and talked about it even before we were married.  We talked about how many children to have, how to raise them, what things to teach them and what they would look like.  We even talked about adoption and how we would both also like to add to our family through that process.
A month after our two year anniversary we welcomed our daughter, little Abigail Kay, into our family.  It was one of the happiest days of our lives. It was amazing to us how a heart that was already so full could stretch so much more to hold the love you have so such a tiny little person.  A year later we felt that our hearts could grow even a little bit more.
No one plans on infertility and we were no exception.  We had no problem getting our little Abi and we were counting on that ease again.  But God had other plans for us.  After multiple miscarriages in quick succession and a diagnosis of “unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss,” we realized that it would be through the blessing of adoption that our little family would grow.
 Harding Family1
So, for the last three years we’ve been on the roller coaster of emotions that is the adoption process.  From the anxiety and hope of putting ourselves out there for birth mothers to see and then waiting, to the elation of a call from our case worker letting us know a little girl would be joining your family in just a few months, to the heartbreak of hearing, just hours before that little girl’s birth, that the mother had made the very difficult decision to parent on her own.
After the heartbreak of flying home to Boston from Las Vegas empty handed we took a few months to regroup and focus on the three of us for a while.  Now we’re ready and keen to get back in the swing of things.  Abi especially is excited to get a “little swibling” in our house.
We would feel so honored if you would  help us spread the word & keep us in mind if you hear of anything.  You can view our adoption profile HERE, our blog HERE or take a peek at our life through instagram @missyharding

Easy enough, right? We’ll announce the winner April 15 via email, good luck!

Small Fry takes NYC!

Are you ready for our exciting announcement?

NEWYORK

Someone asked us what cities have the most Small Fry readers, and we had no idea, so we looked it up. We were shocked to see that New York City is our number one city for readership. By a landslide! The cities after New York dot the world, but the Big Apple the clear winner.

To show our appreciation to you New Yorkers we are coming to you with a contest! We’ll be in NYC next week and want to gift one special reader and their family a Small Fry + Lumineux Film family shoot. Just like Joy, and Brooke, and Laura before you, this extra special memento is truly priceless and we can’t wait to shoot with one of our readers!

Here are the details:

If you can meet us in NYC on April 4th, 2013, you’re eligible to enter this contest!

Email us at hello at smallfryblog dot com with “New York Film” as the subject line, including a few things:

1. A quick bio on your family, names, ages, and what makes your family unique and deserving of a Lumineux Film. You can also nominate friends and relatives if you’d like!

2. A recent family picture or individual images of your family members for reference.

3. We are Jenner Brown of Lumineux’s number one fans, so of course we want him to feel the love too! To be eligible, follow Jenner on Instagram (@jennerbrown_) and Facebook.

We will be picking the winner on Monday April 1st at 8:00 am MST so get your emails in before that! Good luck, and thank you for all the support, New York City!

newborn essentials giveaway! [closed]

Congratulations to Megan H. for winning this giveaway!

One of our most requested posts is our favorite products for new babies and new mamas. We are so happy to present it today, and even better, this entire $1000+ loot will go to one lucky reader! Keep reading to enter, but first here’s some info on why we love each of these products.
newborngiveawaynew

1. Candy Kirby Designs leggings [$38]: We’re just slightly obsessed with Candy Kirby. The designs are spot on and the soft jersey is unbeatable for your little one. We hardly get our newborns dressed out of sleep sacks (see below) but when we do, a soft legging is it!

2. As infants develop strength in sight, a simple mobile with minimal movement is ideal. “Up in the Air” [$66.00] wooden mobile by Petit Collage is simply stunning! See more Petit Collage mobiles here.

3. Bloom Coco Baby Lounger [$350] in orange and acrylic. A bouncer is vital in those early stages, especially if your baby likes to be constantly rocked and bounced. Not only is it vital for their happiness, but if it gets you a few quiet minutes that means a shower! And let’s be honest, with a newborn, a shower is everything!

4. Solids! Such an exciting time in your infant’s progression, we’ve all toiled over the idea of making our own baby food, but where to start? We love Piyo Piyo Baby Food Processor Set [$17]: which is a seven piece food processor for making baby food! Piyo Piyo makes the whole process that much easier. Easier clean-up, storage, and think of all those nutrients and enzymes!

5. You’ve heard all about our love for Honest Co. Now you get to see for yourself – with a diapering bundle [$75]! Honest has created a non-toxic, chlorine-free pulp, plant-based inner and outer layers, bio-based absorbent core, no fragrances, lotions or chemical additives, these diapers are the king for sensitive newborn skin!

6. Mother Tucker Nursing Tank by Belly Bandit [$79.95]. This one is everything we love and need as post-partum mothers and more! With a newborn, if you choose to nurse, it’s usually sporadic feedings, sometimes it feels like those (large) ladies are always out. Mix that with the post-partum pooch (like the most supple cinnamon roll dough you’ve ever felt, aren’t you lucky?) and the whole mid-section area is sort of a temporary mess. This tank makes nursing a breeze, and with that tight Belly Bandit material, it will keep you feeling contained, covered and confident.

7. Little Hip Squeaks makes our favorite swaddling blanket [$44.80]! 100% organic fabric, thick enough to keep your baby warm, thin enough to use as a cover, and cute enough to display on the wall. See the collection here.

8. Little Giraffe makes the most luxuriously thick and soft blankets, but did you know about their hooded towels [$55]? Made with that unbeatably soft Giraffe Luxe material, but just for bathtime. We can’t imagine putting those so-soft babies in anything else!

9. If you’ve ever looked at reviews for baby carriers, you already know that Ergo is the highest rated, hands down. It grows with your child and you can adjust for front, back and hip carrying. We love this special edition version [$145] made for Every Mother Counts – which is an organization devoted to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for all moms in all nations. It’s a truly inspired group and we hope you’ll support them as well! More carrier colors here!

10. Do you remember when Puj tubs launched, and how revolutionary it was? Even all these years later, there still is nothing like it in the market. It makes bath time a breeze since you can set Puj in just about any sink or basin and it molds to the area and keeps the baby protected. The new Flyte [$35] folds right in half even! When you’re done, wipe it down with soap and water and you’re good to go! Mold, mildew resistant and not to mention a lot cleaner than the kitchen sink! No more bending over the bathtub side awkwardly trying to wash your slippery babe!

11. With a baby comes stuff. So much stuff! It seems that baby gear takes over your living space, and with that anytime we can find awesomely designed pieces that look great out in the open, we’re thrilled! Boon‘s drying rack [$14.99] is just that.

12. For those first several weeks, nothing will touch our babies except those super soft sleep gowns. Boys or girls, it doesn’t matter. It’s cozy, makes those frequent diaper changes a super cinch and they just look so sweet! We love Winter Water Factory‘s line of gowns [$32] – check them all out here.

13. One thing we’re fascinated by are how women come to find the brands, products, and systems that they incorporate into their life long-term. Like the mom who has put vaseline on their eyes since they were a teenager, we all have this cool chance to sift through commerce and find our own regimens. Bluum box [3 months delivery service! $75] likes this concept as well, and they curate boxes of new products for mother and baby and send them out monthly. What an awesome way to try new things and find your favorites!

Now, for the real reason you’re here, how to enter to win all this loot! Also, if you’re not a new mama but you know someone who is, you can enter on their behalf as well!

products we love: the wet brush

This weekend we’re talking all about hair! Next up is our favorite little tool for ourselves and the boys.

If you have kids with any amount of hair you’ve probably dealt with the rat’s nest – the sign of a night of tossing and turning, friction and mashing – that leaves you with one giant dread lock to brush out. If your kid has a sensitive head it’s even more of an ordeal. Emily actually cut her boy Hayes’ hair because he wouldn’t let her brush it. Thankfully Wet Brush found us!

brush, hair kids
The main reason why the Wet Brush works so well is because it has super soft and flexible bristles. They work their way through your hair without pulling even a little bit. No tears, no running away in fear, it’s wonderful. You can use this brush straight out of the shower, or with your dry hair. It really is a remarkable little thing, and we ALL use it, it’s great with extensions, curls, sensitive heads, and those unruly bed heads.

Happy good hair days ahead!

Wet Brush sent us brushes to try out, but as always this post and all opinions are our own.

small fry favorite love songs

We all have vivid memories of our parents singing to us. For Emily, her dad worked around the clock as a doctor, but whenever he could he’d pull out his guitar and sing “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac by her bedside. In that instant the world felt so safe and calm, and watching his tan hands strum and pick the song out a million times over just solidified her love of music at an early age. For Nicole, her sweet daddy passed away when she was just a teenager, and no matter how dark the days felt, her mom would sing “I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills, I love the flowers, I love the daffodils” and she was immediately reminded of all the beautiful things of this world. That song perhaps shaped her into the eternal optimist that we know and love to this very day. Jenna’s earliest memories are dancing with her dad by their record player to the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Elvis. You’d think you couldn’t fit all that soul into such a tiny girl, but she carried it with her and loves and sings along with her dad even still. (We attribute her killer dance moves to this education as well.) We are all tied to our parents even tighter because of that shared love of music, and we hope to pass it to our own kids!

love songs, play list, i tunes, brooke white, dixie chicks, bob dylan, cat powers

Having our own children deepened our love and respect for our parents, and it’s even more so such an extension of our love for our spouses! That moment when you sing one of “your” love songs to your little one it’s sort of this magical full circle moment. It represents a time where you held hands and kissed through dates, movies, concerts, long drives, all the while they were just a dream in our heads. We wondered what they might look like, or funny things they might say, and then fast forward and there we are rocking them to sleep, singing those very songs. Here is a list of the ones we love to sing with our little families that no matter how many times brings a lump to our throat, tears to our eyes, and make our hearts feel like they just might burst.

Take a listen, we hope you enjoy!

prescribe nutrition giveaway [closed]

We were talking about resolutions the other day, and how inspired we feel to set them, how motivated we feel to start them, and then how demoralizing it can feel when we lose steam a few days in. For the small or large resolutions that really stick, don’t you feel so proud? For Nicole it’s praying with her family everyday, Jenna committed to eating clean and working out (forty pounds gone in the last year!), for Emily it was kicking caffeine (five years and counting!) each while personal and varying, truly improved all our lives. We’re excited to join Prescribe Nutrition’s course this upcoming Monday and hope you will join us, too!

THE TEAM:

Prescribe Nutrition

We thought it might be helpful for those of you who are feeling motivation to improve your health, or getting to the bottom of a behavior, allergies, mood swings, or other health issues in yourself or your family members, to know about this course! This crazy smart and caring team of women behind Prescribe Nutrtition- MeganKatie and Anna – nutritionists, yoga, spin, ballet barre class instructors, and mothers, who have started the “New Year, New Rules” 15 day course that lives by the adage of teaching you how to fish versus handing you a plate of salmon.

With their in-depth knowledge into digestion and how it can be the root to a whole slew of health and behavioral problems and their solutions of making simple improvements to your diet, you can get back that natural energy that as mothers we all so desperately need. These women know that getting to the root of our health will make all the difference versus trying to treat problems that arise from less than healthy choices. A great example of this is how a migraine isn’t a deficiency of migraine medicine but a possible food sensitivity, magnesium deficiency, toxic overload and then some. Prescribe Nutrition is all about solving health problems at the very root.

THE COURSE:

In this 15 day course you will have 24/7 access to their team, and they will provide you with a lifestyle overhaul. Here’s what it’s not: a fast, a cleanse, low-carb, low-fat, low-taste, torture or even boring diet. What it is: is fifteen days to a better understanding of ourselves, easy changes to help us kick those nasty habits that hang on our resolution lists January after January. Here is a sample post of the types of meals you will be eating during your course and hopefully forevermore! All certifiably tasty, and healthful! This is something you can do on your own or as a family, and Anna talks all about detoxing as a family here.

This course is is such a steal at $149, and starts January 7th, 2012. You’ll learn in two weeks what takes some years, as well as having two nutritionists at your beck and call (what a dream!). If you’re ready to change your life, here’s how you can win your own spot with Prescribe Nutrition’s “New Year New Rules” course or if you don’t want to risk it use the code “nynr20” for 20% off the course here.

finger puppet nativity

We cannot believe Christmas is tomorrow! As kids, Christmas Eve always felt like one hundred years, and this year we have tried to compile some things to help take the edge off our kids’ anticipation. We partnered with Say Yes to Hoboken for this project and you can read all the details over at this post.

This is a pretty quick craft considering you can keep it forever, and finally! A nativity that kids can not only touch, but play with. Finger Puppet NativityFinger Puppet Nativity Details

We hope you have a wonderful holiday! We are simply blown away at all the support from our Operation Sandy Hook benefit over at Brickyard Buffalo. We have sold more than 1,000 prints so far and with each sale we hope some of the weight has been lifted over the people of Newtown. We’ll be taking this week off to spend extra quality time with our loved ones. We have an awesome week of healthful posts to kick off the New Year when we return!

Merry Christmas!

Love,

The Small Fry Editors  — Emily, Jenna and Nicole.

holiday pajamas

We all grew up with the Christmas tradition of opening a new cozy pair of pajamas on Christmas Eve, did you as well? We are happily carrying it on with our own families and wanted to share a few of our favorites in any price point (starting at $11.00) this season:

1. Crimson Birch by Kicky Pants.

2. Reindeer Stripe by Gap.

3. Flannel One Piece by J.Crew.

4. Fair Aisle Pajamas by Hanna Anderson.

5. Moose Buffalo Plaid by Old Navy.

A few years ago we had a Christmas Pajama Party and it was such a great time! We highly recommend. Here’s a write with all the all details.

Christmas Pajama Party

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! We can’t thank you enough for your outpouring of love and support as we shared our own personal stories and then launched Operation Sandy Hook.
