warm coats & cool dads

When Ugg Australia approached us about testing out their new Fall ’12 line of coats and using them to chronicle “A Day in the Life of a Cool Kid”, we figured anything and everything our boys know about being cool comes from their dads!  So now is the time to finally introduce them to you. We do all our Small Frying while they’re busy at work, which is why they haven’t made their debuts until now, but don’t let their absence fool you. These daddios are the center of our boys’ universes and we love them loads as well.

Dane, a junior loan officer by day, snow and skateboard nut by night. [With Nicole, Dash and Sunny.]

Russ owns a construction company, lives for baseball and loves working on his ’67 Bronco. [With Emily, Hayes and Callum.]

Andrew is an adrenaline junkie that loves rock climbing, skiing, and anything else that terrifies the rest of us, all while running a home security system business. [With Jenna, Quinn and Jude.]

The best part about these husbands of ours are that no matter what they’re into, when they walk in the door it’s all about family. But, you can bet that they’ll have these boys on the slopes, at the half-pipe, and hurdling seats to catch a fly ball at the baseball field in no time.

Thank you to Ugg Australia for gifting us these incredible coats. We picked the Crazy Horse II in black and indigo and they are top quality and fit incredibly well. We love that the sleeves and hood zip off to make it work in three different ways.

from head to toe: Kmart

Here’s some tips for scouting a head to toe look at Kmart:

They have great “two for” deals, meaning you can get great basics at a low cost. For example, Gracie below is wearing a grey tee that is in a mix and match with other basics colors like white and black, 2 for $7! Kmart also had darling denim with a sparkly tuxedo stripe down the sides, in grey and dark blue 2 for $12. Throwing in a cute wintry vest, and $8 rain boots and you’ve got a whole outfit for under $25.

For Hayes, Kmart boy’s section has so many great basics like plaid pearl snap button-downs, cute long sleeve waffle tees (this one has robots on skateboards!) and the pants are a breathable chino material from the girl’s section. If you remember our shoe upgrade post from a few months ago, you know we love the Joe Boxer sneaker line. Kmart usually has the Joe Boxer sneakers on a “two for” deal as well so you’re getting them for less than $5 a piece!

All in all Kmart has some great basics at unbelievably low prices, definitely worth a stop in!

happy thanksgiving.

As we scrolled through our #smallfryminiipad feed, reading what our friends and readers were most thankful for, tears started flowing, we couldn’t help it! Such sweet sentiments from all over the world, and all centered around loved ones. There’s a saying we like that says “What if you woke up today with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?” while it is quite thought provoking and a little terrifying to imagine, it still remains that the relationships we hold with others are our greatest blessings. Perhaps the best thing about having a small fry in your life, whether it be your own child, or the child of another, is their uncanny ability to love more fully, and see the world in simple beauty.

We are so thankful for their pure perspective in our lives. They bring so much joy, don’t they? While it doesn’t keep us exempt from pain, or loneliness, or deep and unshakable sadness at times – goodness knows we’ve felt all of those things – to look down into their shining faces and feel that you are their world, and they wouldn’t change a single thing about you? We are overflowingly grateful to know that kind of love in this life.

Gratitude Instagram Mash-up

Is it trite to say we wish we had iPad Minis for all of you? We truly do. But, since there is only one, congratulations to our randomly selected winner, Kayleigh Larkins! Email in your shipping address and your color and storage preferences and we’ll send it over!

moms you should meet: Casey Wiegand

This beautiful woman is an artist, writer and of mom of three. She is an original, and unique, and has created a path through motherhood all her own. We admire her, and know you will too. Here’s a mom you should meet: Casey Wiegand.

Lunchtime.
Sweet baby Apple was sound asleep and my two “big” kids were eating at the table. I was sitting between them and after a few moments Ainsleigh creeped over and climbed up on my lap. She was facing towards me and grabbed my cheeks, looked me straight in the eyes and smiled….over and over again in between kisses on my cheeks.
Something about the way the sun was shining behind her, something about those sweet dimples that she has. Something about the way her tiny fingers were stroking my hair and clinging to me.
Something about the way she clenches on when she thinks I am about to get up.
She, too, wants it to last.
I desperately wanted to jump up and grab my camera but I
didn’t. I held her tight. Soaked it in. And am doing the best job that I can right now to repaint it as a memory.

The weather here in Texas is changing.
I love the fall. I love the chiminey burning on the back porch, and the leaves that are beginning to fall. It nudges at my soul.

Today I was thinking.

Recently I had to take a personality test for some “work” related things. We wanted to see where we fit best on our team and what roles we could easily be in. There were so many things about the test that were so eye opening for me to read and see written out on paper.

Something that really struck me though was what my results said about me as a mother.
*help their children become who they really are
*support their children’s creativity and originality
*are good at helping their children get in touch with their feelings
I have no idea if my kids would actually say these things about me or if someday these are ways that they would talk about me as a mother…but I sure hope so.
I desperately want to embrace my babies as individuals…I want to help each one in their own way figure out their purpose, their passions and foster that.
I want them to feel deeply, and learn that it’s okay. I want them to learn to express that.
Motherhood for me is such a joy.
A “life giver”.
I can hardly believe it’s going as fast as it is.
I just hope that I can help my babies find their life purpose…and help them make it happen.

thanksgiving photo booth

The beauty of Thanksgiving is admittedly lost on small children: they have to wait for hours to eat, then after they are done,  all the sudden all of the grown-ups are ready for a nap. So we’ve teamed up with a few of our favorite creative bloggers to give you some great things to do to make Thanksgiving exciting for all ages. Today is all about the party staple, the photobooth.

Here’s what we did:

Thanksgiving Photo Booth

We used The Party Dress’s Thanksgiving Photo Prop printables, but wanted to make them a little bit more durable for multiple years and purposes, so Emily cut them out of felt. Craft wizard Alison, of The Alison Show, made us this gorgeous photo booth back drop that doubles as a table cloth for the big feast using her turkey stencil. Also, thanks to Lou Lou and Company for the beautiful tassel garland!

traveling without kids

The kidless vacation at times is can be a fickle thing! Relaxing and then guilt-ridden, desperately needed, and then self-indulgent, carefree and anxiety-inducing. Leaving our kids in capable hands so we can take those much needed breaks brings with it a roller coaster of emotion. Jenna headed off to a tropical island with her husband recently and wanted to channel some of those feelings into something that would help calm her nerves and express her feelings, while creating something her boys could look forward to each day while she was gone. Here’s what she did:

Every day Jenna and Andrew were gone, there was an envelope waiting for their boys. Most were filled with tiny gifts that cost one dollar or less and then there was a couple exciting bigger gifts too. Knowing their son Quinn was practicing writing his name in preschool, so he got a tiny notebook to fill up. A handful of change (which to a three year old is pretty darn cool,) and favorite treats brought so much joy while they were away.  A stack of bandaids so their boys would know they were thinking of them and wished they could be there to kiss any boo boos better. And finally, an iTunes gift card so they could get a brand new movie to watch which not only excites the kids, but also gives the babysitter some valuable leverage! Most importantly it gave Jenna some peace of mind knowing her kids could have a little piece of mom and dad whenever they needed it.

Small Fry Films: Watercolor Cut Outs

Fostering creativity in our kids isn’t so much an action as it is a reaction. You can’t force them to do creative things, but you can concoct opportunities for their creativity to emerge. And even then, the result is rarely what you think it would or should be. It’s better, because it’s all them.

Huge thank you to the genius Jenner Brown of Lumineux Films for this gorgeous video, enjoy!
