McCall is breathtaking and the skiing was incredible. Not sure I have any birthday words of wisdom, feeling more like a foreign exchange student than teacher. Stringing together what I know, and trying to make sense of the rest. For better or worse, I am seeing hearts clearer then ever before. He holds onto my hair all day long, like his own little comforting anchor. Little does he know he’s held me steady for the last 10+ months. I’ve cried into his little neck more times than I can count, his sweet song humming into my ear. He never pulls away or tries to slide down off my lap. We named him Shia (shy-uh)— Hebrew for “gift from God” but didn’t know just how perfect it would be. #woodyframe⠀

clapping, climbing stairs, making messes everywhere he goes, popping teeth, first stitches 💔, saying mama, mo (more), dada, cruising the furniture and yelling at Alexa so he can dance to music all day. 🥵

The Dagara tribe in Africa has a term— Yielbongura or, “things that knowledge can’t eat.” I’ve come to know that there are many things you can’t acquire from a book, or second hand. You have to experience them for yourself. For many years I prided myself in being 100% capable. I don’t need help, I can take care of myself and my family. The wheel without a squeak. I found really quickly over the last couple months that I cannot do everything alone.

Like anything hard-fought, my boundaries mean everything to me, and in return I would never want to cross yours. I knock before entering, wait for the greenlight, show up when I’m called. I see now how misguided that was. It has been my Yielbongura, I know better now. There are times in life where we cannot wait. We must run to the aid of another. We pound the door down to save what is inside. I have so much gratitude to the people in my life who ran without a call. Strangers, friends I’ve never met in person, friends from every stage of life - from before I could walk, to this very moment. ⠀

These angels thought of every little thing from what my kids would wear to the funeral to what questions to ask the medical examiner. Sending music, art☝🏼, books, poetry, tokens, that might bring me comfort. Even down to how the drive home from saying goodbye might feel (#lightsonforcollin.) Food, Rest, Therapy, Medicine, Balm. Rocking my baby and rocking me. Even months later, knowing when to reach out, what to say, never letting me feel alone or forgotten. ⠀

Anyone who saw said the same thing: “Your friends are amazing.” I know it so deeply. Thank you for every tangible and unseen thing. Thank you for teaching me how to truly love others, how to mourn with those that mourn. For your Christlike hearts and Christlike actions. I know Him better now, because I saw Him in you. #lighttheworld
