Chapter Books for Kids!

By Jenna.

The other day on Instagram I asked for book suggestions for my 2nd grader who’s reading on a 4th grade level and it’s blowing my mind! What to order for him was on my mind when I put the question out there and now there are HUNDREDS of responses to sift through!

But yay I did the work for you and listed the top 10 suggestions people had for little readers….if you’re anything like me this is new territory and I hope it helps you shop. If¬†you have any suggestions that I didn’t include I’d love to hear them in the comments – we are always looking for more books to read for Quinn since he is an insomniac and reads instead of sleeps…next topic, how can I get him to sleep?! ūüėČ

Natural History Museum of Utah

Last week if you follow us on Instagram you saw a quick tour of the Natural History Museum of Utah! They invited us up for a VIP tour and a peek at their new exhibit, Poison! We’re giving away 4 tickets on our Instagram today, so be sure and enter for a free trip with your own fam!

Right when you walk in you’ll see this three+ story glass wall filled with artifacts. Its so stunning and a feast for the eyes!IMG_1575Then the tour started with a VIP look at the Paleontology lab. They have headsets for everyone and I found that Cal paid so much closer attention when he could constantly hear the guide. Even if he was wandering away he was still in ear shot. I learned so much more too! (Probably because Raleigh was asleep and I was as free as a bird (with a baby strapped to me)FullSizeRender We watched them dig bones and learned all about the full skeletons they’ve been finding in Southern Utah! So cool.¬†NHMUThe museum is so gorgeous from the architecture down to the art on the walls. This is the dinosaur exhibit. I loved the art work that stretched out across the whole exhibit.NHMUAfter learning so much about the indigenous animals and plants of Utah, we were able to see the Poison exhibit. See poisonous frogs and other creatures. Learn about the history of poison – arsenic, herbs and roots, and how each culture utilized them for hundreds of years. I was fascinated by the Mad Hatter section, I didn’t realize they earned that name because they were actually really erratic. And that was due to the chemicals used in the hats they made.¬†NHMUCal’s favorite part were the three poison scene stations. Sit at an iPad and discover clues as to how a person or animal got poisoned. Make your guess and see if you’re right. He sat here for a long, long time!NHMUSince the Artifact wall goes up three stories, each level gives you a new look.NHMUMy personal favorite part were these large boxes full of minerals and gemstones.¬†NHMUAfter the tour we had lunch at their Museum Cafe. The chef has 20+ years experience Internationally and in NYC and everything was so delicious. Tons of Gluten Free options. Everything locally sourced when possible and darling food for the kids.IMG_1544Thanks to NHMU for the awesome afternoon!! We will definitely be back for one of their awesome Summer camps, they also host birthday parties and have activities galore all Summer long! Read up on their activities here. Head to Instagram to enter for your own tickets!

FRY TO THE DAY.

Heyyyyy Fryday!

Jenna here.

Untitled design-8I’m obsessing over these incredible knock off glasses. We all know sunglasses get lost like woah so this price makes it more manageable – plus they’re super pretty on.

I recently got a silhouette of Lolly from A Family Print Shop. I cried. It’s such a sweet treasure.

Hear me out but I recently started using The Bloody Buddy. No guys read this blog right? Didn’t think so! It’s definitely a learning curve but I AM SOLD. It takes some getting used to but honestly it’s the best. You don’t have to drag tampons around anywhere (woah life changing) and after having a bunch of kids my flow is…intense and this is up to the challenge. I REALLY love it. Better for the earth too.

i’ve bought this oversized sweater in all the colors. So inexpensive, so cozy, so incredible.

This mug – love all the work she does.

These sneakers are giving me life. My whole world is practically black and gold these days.

Ikea Hack Show Stoppers

We love a good hack. All three of us have been updating pieces in our homes our entire lives! I learned it from my mom, Calleen. She is the queen of seeing beauty in an old outdated piece of furniture and making it into something everyone is talking about.

Those days were before Ikea was up the road. The mecca for clean design, and low priced basic. Because of Ikea, the basic hack has come to the next level right? With a little creativity and a couple minutes, the simple peices they offer can become show stoppers!

Here are some of our very favorite Ikea hacks from around the web.

Traveling with Baby

By Emily in partnership with Ergo.

We’ve got Spring Break on the brain and fly miles to burn and so today is all about traveling with baby! Traveling with BabyI’ve already started using both the new Sophie La Giraffe 360 Carrier and their chic new Anywhere I Go Backpack¬†(available exclusively at¬†Babies R Us¬†until March) but I keep thinking about a solo flight I took with Raleigh and how much easier my life would’ve have been with both. Here’s what I’ll be taking next time around!¬†Traveling with Baby

Left to Right Top to Bottom:

First thing, if you’re on baby duty wear slip-on shoes. Something you can do absolutely hands-free. Thank Heavens for the mule trend! Mine are from here.Traveling with Baby

Binky Clips – Do you know you’ll drop your baby’s pacifier on average 30 times more in a crowded airport or flight than you will in your everyday life. Just kidding, but I swear it always feels that way. Blinky Clips are a must.

Books, Toys, Passports, wallets. The Ergo Backpack has so many options but I love the open pocket (behind the logo) for the items I need to pull out most often while in lines.

We have kiddo sized neck pillows for the big boys on road trips, but on a flight, its so great for baby too! It keeps them more secure through naps and turbulence and I swear Raleigh slept like a rock thanks to this pillow. If you have an extra seat for them it makes for the easiest transfer from arms to laying down.

Puffs, crackers, Mum Mums, yogurt dots. Pouches, bottles, sippies. WHATEVER it needs to be, have plenty. Keeping their mouths busy is great for changes in altitude and ear pressure. If they’re not old enough for gum, make sure snacks are a plenty. Fruit Leather is an absolute MESS but it will buy you 30+ minutes of peace.Traveling with Baby

I love Peppermint essential oil for flights for me and the kids. So great if they get air sick. Mustela makes this No Rinse Cleansing Wash and I love it when I can’t get them to a bath but they need a freshening up. After a sweaty flight, get them smelling sweet again!

Extra clothing, diapers, bibs. June and January makes these thick burp clothsTraveling With Baby for a myriad of uses. I love this silicon bib, so easy to clean off in a hurry. Raleigh is on bottles so extra formula in bags or tupperware and then I always bring a refillable water bottle
. I prefer
my Nalgene because I can unscrew and screw the lid onto my back pack strap so its ea
sy to locate. Fill it up after TSA and then you’re ready for whatever bottles you’ll need. I love this backpack because it has two insulated pockets on either side. Whatever you need kept warm, there is plenty of space! Also, I typically bring extra ziplock or grocery bags in case of spills, wet clothing etc, but these pockets are big enough to hold any of that! Waterproof, too so you won’t get the rest of your belongings wet.

Another nice hack is the changing pad thicker than others I’ve tried, so I lay it down on my extra seat for naps. Keeps them off the germy areas, and gives a little extra padding.¬†Traveling with Baby

There are a million things more you could bring and have a super comfortable flight. I’ve found the best tip is to keep your cool. Even the most prepared mama in the world still might end up with a screaming baby. But, a deep breath and a calm energy can’t hurt. My kids always feed off my energy too, so if I start to panic it seems like everyone joins in!

Thanks to Ergo for sending these products for this post! You can find the Anywhere I Go Backpack and Sophie La Giraffe 360 Baby Carrier on their links!

At Home Workout Gear

K guys¬†we are all busy people and sometimes (always) getting to the gym can feel impossible. So we are ar eroding up the only workout gear you’ll need to get your sweat on at home!¬†how toYoga Mat – Love this mat, It’s inexpensive, well made, pretty and it has a stickiness to it that helps with your yoga practice.

Workout Bands¬†– These are INCREDIBLE. There are so many exercise band movements that will KILL your muscle, and all while you’re watching The Bachelor.

Weighted Medicine Ball – This Ball will be your bestie. Weighted lunges, wall balls and slam balls will help you in your HIIT workouts, increasing your heart rate and getting you in to the fat burn zone.

Dumbbells – Self explanatory but you don’t need fancy gym equipment! You can build really great muscle at home with dumbbells.

Jumprope – Just the word gives me nausea but this little f friend is an excellent way to get your heart rate up in between strength movements. Intervals of jumping will be MUCH harder than that jaunt on the elliptical you were considering.

Align Pant – Let’s get to the good stuff – our absolute favorite pant to work out in. The Align. You’ll gasp at the price but just leap and we will catch you. Once you get them on you’ll realize they’re so much more than a pant, they’re your new best friend.

Sweatshirt – We love to have something to hide the sweat and general hot messiness after you workout and need to run get the kids from school. Nike is never out, but Adidas is definitely in RN.

Shoes – We have no idea if these shoes are any good but man are they pretty…..and on sale!

Water Tumbler – You’ll want to stay hydrated right?! Do it with the best insulated tumbler ever ever. Comes with a spill proof lid and stainless steel straws to help keep your drink even colder! Use code DRINK for 20% off!

Stains 101

Our next stop with our amazing Maytag (remember the one that holds 22 towels?) washer and dryer is STAIN REMOVAL!¬†Having a working knowledge of the best ways to get stains out of clothes makes us feel like superheroes. Like, we’re really doing this mom/adult thing, and we’re rocking at it. It helps to have the right tools on hand and here’s what we suggest for our STAINS 101!Stains101First, make sure your washer and dryer are doing the best work for your stain. This washer has our favorite options for stains, a deep-fill setting and a PowerWash¬ģ agitator. The deep-fill is for the really tough stuff that needs extra room to work it out. The PowerWash¬ģ agitator is concentrated and efficient movement to get those stains to lift. Both¬†options came in especially handy after we went sledding one day and didn’t realize until the first run it was a thin layer of slush on top of a thick layer of mud. ūüėČScreen Shot 2017-02-15 at 10.31.32 AM

Here’s a pic of that swoon-worthy Maytag feature of hidden detergent compartments. WE CANT GET OVER IT! Stains 101And now, for the stain talk.¬†Here’s what we know … Baby Poop? Put it in the sun until it dries out. Seriously. Then wash it like normal. Chocolate? (Always fun trying to tell the¬†difference between the two, good luck!) Scrape it off, flip the garment inside out and treat the back of the stain with soda water! Then wash like normal.¬†Stains 101Chocolate,eggs, oil and butter: Scrape off, flip the stain and soak in cold soda water and then spray with a spot treatment!

And here’s a handful of our most common stains at home for your pin or print pleasure!Stains 101

Okay guys, let us have it? What are your favorite stain removal tricks? We know you’ve got lots up your sleeves!

Thanks to Maytag for sponsoring this post! Catch their awesome washer and dryer duo here and here!

FRYday: Emily

FIRST things first,¬†you all know I bought an Intellibed several months ago and I am still loving it so much. You can read my post here. They’re doing 30% off (that is THE best deal you will ever get, that was what I was offered!) until February 28. So if you’re thinking about it doing, NOW is the time. The 10% off “SMALLFRY10” code is still active but you cannot combine! So, hurry up on that 30%!!

NEXT, Raleigh is officially weaned. He did it himself and I have had to mourn the loss of breastfeeding little by little basically his whole life (it was such a struggle that post is here.) so I feel okay, but of course wish it could be different! TMI – but my first period post-nursing has been a DOOZY. Just emotionally. Break-outs, mood swings, tired, annoyed, like a regular period on steroids. Halp. When does it go back to normal?!
Okay onto the next:fryday3
Wearing: I have had no time to think about clothes, but I picked up a few Spring items from H&M — thinking these Uneven¬†Destroyed Hem Jeans will be a huge Spring trend // White Derby Shoes¬†(I typically HATE white shoes of any kind so this is big for me) // Gray Tee¬†$9!
Decorating: Recap for the last few weeks… we sold our house, moved into a temporary rental and took a few too many trips to Ikea and Target making the space just right for us. I shared them all my Off Duty page if you want to see, and did a little tour on my Insta Stories and probably 50 people said they went a bought the Self Watering Pot. It’s incredible and only $30.
Using: I am a long time liquid eyeliner user, but I was gifted this eyeliner felt-tip and I feel like it’s¬†so easy¬†to use. So for you friends who’ve said my Stila favorite is too tricky, try this one! Lastly, I am SUCH a gym cliche right now with my silicon wedding band and these blue tooth earbuds! Both amazing purchases, but the earbuds are especially life changing for the gym. I haven’t used the Beats ones, but for a third of the price I am thrilled with these Skull Candys.
Reading: Century of Struggle. Okay, listen. I am very moderate politically. I don’t fully side one way or the other and this makes it hard for me to draw a line in the sand. BUT! As a woman in 2017¬†it makes me want to rip my hair out when I see other women saying “I don’t need to march/protest/care because I never felt A,B,C or D reason why other women march/protest/care.” That is the most wonderfully amazing news. BUT! There is a reason we feel so secure in our life as a woman and that is because of the tireless efforts of women that have come before us. I wish every women took the time to understand Women’s Suffrage. It is so much more than reproductive rights. I tear up just thinking about what those women endured for us. The mere fact that women still feel the need to protest should really be all the rest of us need to know. Even if we don’t feel the same.
Listening: Russ and I are listening to “No-Drama¬†Discipline” on audiobook each day and then discussing it at night with this workbook. Only a few chapters in, but it has totally changed the way I think about parenting. I am working so hard to try and implement it all. 7 years in to parenting my methods are pretty knee-jerk & proving hard to break, but I think we’ll get there! Essentially, they want to teach you not only parent more effectively in the moment, but also build the way their brain works in the long run too.
Hard to explain, but if I had to sum up my favorite element it would be one simple wording change. So instead of saying “They’re just doing this naughty thing to try and get my (my husbands, their siblings etc) attention.” Switch “Attention-Seeking” to “Connection-Seeking.” It feels counter-intuitive to me to give them what they want for their negative behavior. But in the long run, giving them moments of connection (seriously it only takes a few seconds and they’re off doing something else) has eliminated infinitely more bad behavior. I’ll report back once I finish the book!
Anticipating: My baby sister is getting married next weekend! As Maid-of-Honor I am so happy to give them a toast and I am panicking! Like, I write for a living, and used to be alright at it, and I am choking so far. Pray for me. Or send me a really great toast I can plaigarize. ūüėČ
love you all. Happy weekend!
