You guys know we’ve been working on DIY art for the new house (see our first piece in our Kid Art archives!) and today we are teaming up with Gymboree and their #followoyourart campaign to share this family friendly project inspired by Jackson Pollock!
Splatter Slip Ons // Lace up Sneakers
I love using Tempera paint so there’s no worry about ruining clothes or any toxic ingredients. You can spread out a drop canvas ($8 at the hardware store and HUGE so you can get a nice sized piece for the wall!) on the floor with a step ladder or attached to the wall as pictured for easier access. The drip effect is super cool, but might come with more clean up!
There is no real method to this madness and that’s the point and what makes it unique and fun! I picked a color palette so it wouldn’t look to crazy and a little more intentional and I think this would be so fun for any of the boys’ rooms!
I love picking from Gymboree they always have great basics and on-trend pieces to weave throughout so the boys feel proud and excited while I know that they won’t wear out before they get to the next brother. And since their offerings typically run from infant on up to 14 year olds it’s so easy to find coordinating pieces for the whole family! Perfect for family pictures or whatever your match-matchy heart desires! Once it’s dry you just stretch it over an existing canvas and staple on or you can construct a frame pretty easily if you have the right tools! One day I’ll do a tutorial for frames! And here are all the links for the boys’ Gymboree outfits fo easy access.

I won’t say I have Spring Fever, it’s much too soon for that. But! I am noticing new arrivals and thinking about how I can style them for the cold! So here’s three ways to justify a Spring Skirt no matter what the weather throws at you!
PLEATED SKIRT (comes in orange too, the asymmetrical hem is everything!) Stick it with a plain blouse like this $10! // Top it with this MUST-HAVE SWEATER JACKET // CAT EYE SUNNIES // PERFECT TRIO of NECKLACES
BLOUSE // STRIPED SKIRT // STATEMENT EARRINGS to tie in with the heels. // ANKLE STRAP HEELS // TORTOISE SHELL SUNNIES //
POLKA DOT SKIRT (polka dot is huge for Spring!) // WHITE SWEATER // ORANGE JACKET // If I must wear pink its going to be with orange. LOVE the TWO-TONE FLATS // WHITE BROW BAR SUNGLASSES //
Kohl’s sent us to see the new Disney•Pixar movie Coco as they are carrying a whole line for all ages with Coco merchandise and other Coco inspired pieces in their stores! Then boys got to pick out a t-shirt for the showing and I had heard such good things about this movie so I was pretty excited myself. I bawled several times. At one point tears were just streaming down my face and it was starting to sound like sobs. Coco is SO good. One of Pixar’s bests for sure. They captured the vibrancy of Dia de los Muertos and so many of the aspects of Mexican culture that we admire! We also learned so much about Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead – making sure your loved ones are on the ofrenda so they can pass back over to visit you. The cempoalxochitl flower being the passageway, the way to give their blessing. I love it all!
If you haven’t seen it the movie is all about remembering our loved ones that have passed, our heritage, the things that make our families what and who they are. Those pieces of us that are in our blood and how they came to be. It is also about sacrifice, forgiveness, hard-work, family above all else. There was a moment when Miguel yells to a family member “I’m proud to be your family!” and they yell it back, “I’m proud to be YOUR family.” That’s when I lost it. I watched my boys’ faces light up from the screen enjoying the movie and thought about all the proud moments I have had as their mother. So many. I hoped that they would be proud of me, too. That they would feel belonging and pride in being a Frame. Being the sons of Russ and Emily. Being one another’s brothers.
Music is a huge part of the storyline and of course the soundtrack is so fun! I come from a musical family on both sides but especially my dad’s. His grandpa Kenner Casteel Kartchner was a fiddler (and also a town drunk, but hey!) and a love for music runs deep. My Great Aunt Merle would have us over on Christmas and we’d listen to violins and fiddles and piano and guitar and sing together and it is one of my happiest childhood memories. I know KC wrestled hard with his love of music and wanting to share it with the world while also being a good dad. I think we all have that thing that we want to share with the world but we have to make the choice everyday, where our heart goes and when it stays at home.
Anyway, just had to jot some of my thoughts down and here are some of pieces I am digging from Kohl’s Coco line! Hayes’ Shirt // Cal’s Shirt
My favorite t-shirt from the line! // A cool guitar hoodie // Love these leggings with the cempoalxochitl flower // Pretty dress for women! //
Sponsored by Kohl’s new Coco line – find it all here!

ADD ON: I love a girl in a dress with tights and boots. These boots are perfect! More budget friendly here. // Glitter Tights for extra festivity // A tulle headband for a party. // A beret to be warm and the coolest little chica.
A few more options for the dudes.
Opposuits will have everyone talking! // You know how I feel about Appaman. We have this Velvet suit and its to die for! Comes in a few colors! // As they get older and start fighting you on what you want them to wear its always a win to see a Star Wars fair isle sweater suitable for church. Compromise! // This rolled sweater is so nice, who needs a suit and tie! // Chukka boots /// Obsessed with these velvet loafers! // Plaid shirt + bowtie combo, so cheap too! // Needing cheap options for festive button-downs? Love this green and blue buffalo, too!
If you haven’t already snagged your Holiday PJs it seems this weekend is a good one to go for it! So many great deals. 40% off Hanna Andersson, 50% off Old Navy (pug life, ha!), 40% off Gap etc. etc.
Fair Isle is a huge trend this holiday season and there are loads of PJ options to suit! Teddy Bear Fair Isle – comes in this one piece too if you prefer! //Burt’s Bees KILLED it this year with their PJs. Such perfect classic prints and even some less obvious but still festive. This plaid and the gray plaid and the black cuff one at the bottom, too! // This Yoda Gingerbread Fair Isle might be my favorite PJ of the whole round up. Too funny. // Also love this tiny gnome pattern! // Mini Boden has a set of PJs, perfect for a holiday weekend away! // Gray with Strung Lights – darling // I love this sweat suit set, wear it out and about, it feels a little less PJ and more loungey which I love. Rock and Roll Santa! // Academy of Cool for your too cool for crazy Holiday PJs kid. // Holiday Rags to Raches (did you see they make stockings, too!) // Classic Plaid set! // Darth Vader Fair isle // This isn’t Christmassy but still such an cool idea. Color on your PJs with their special markers and you’ve got something fun to do after you open them, too! // Aden and Anais makes the softest jams and they come up to size 4 now, too! This resembles a snowflake but actually isn’t so it works all year round! // Books to Bed is a line at Nordstrom that would make the most darling gift any time of year but especially their Holiday line. Go check it out to see what I mean – its so perfectly retro! Hard to see in this tiny collage, but worth a look for sure! And each set comes with a book!
Black Friday deals are live on Amazon! Lots of good fashion finds that they sent me early, I’ll be shopping the rest of the deals live and adding to the list below!
Swim // Sneakers // Matching pajamas for all sizes // Sorels // Frye Heeled Combat Boots // Tassel Heels // Long cardigan // Gazelles for $50 WHAT! // Heeled Ankle Boots // Acorn Slipper Socks // Adidas Slides
Since I will be at Bijou’s Holiday Market all weekend and we’ll be embracing the Holidays full throttle with lights and music and gifts galore, I try to dress the part, too! Here’s what I am wearing this weekend as well as a few other good finds! Raleigh’ Rag is live too, their holiday line is amazing. Always obsessed with Rags to Raches.
Gap has 40% off EVERYTHING and these lace up jeans are the most rad ever. I love that they have that edge and sexiness but they’re still wearable to work or with the kids. I put it with this cozy sweater with the fur cuffs. Its a great fit and festive without screaming RED & GREEN & METALLIC – if that’s more your bag.
Also speaking of bags I got my Freshly Picked backpack all weekend long since I have to carry ALL the things. I am LOVING it! It launches Monday for all you who didn’t do their Kickstarter. I have these slides in two colors now and love them! Also loving a glitter eye (more budget friendly) for a more bland outfit any time of year, but especially during the Holidays. So fun!
For day two I fell head over heels with this ruffled overall jumpsuit. They fit like a dang dream and I feel like I don’t say that often, if ever. My turtleneck is H&M and sold out but this turtleneck is a classic (make sure you get it tight if you’re wearing it under things) and these boots. I love the heel height for long days like today and also it has the appearance of glitter but it’s not! Its just like this wrinkly foil which I love because patent boots look terrible once you’ve worn them a few times. All those creases reflect and stand out like crazy, you can’t tell with these! Also this rose gold is gorg.
I am obsessed with layering with a thin turtleneck. It is so chic, so any dresses that seem like they’re a little too revealing for Winter, just imagine it with a T-neck under! ASOS has 25% off dresses, H&M has up to 50% off Party Looks. I’m glad we could all be on the same track. Also these roundups make me crazy because I can’t choose the color of certain pieces. Like this blue top – its way better in black. Click to see all color options! Also am I crazy to put these lace-up mountain boots with a frilly dress? Maybe.
Weekend Deals and a Happy Fryday to you all!
Nordstrom Rack additional markdowns on clearance! So many good shoes. // Toys R Us has a sale on legos for you Christmas shoppers!
Up to 50% off Gap + 20% more at check out. These lace-up jeans are en route to me as we speak. Dead over them. I am always looking for a fresh take on jeans since I wear them so much. It gives new life to your whole closet. Love the wrap plaid top for a break from the typical blouse and the velvet wrap around is a stunner. Cheap hats, too!
Ann Taylor Loft is 40% off. So many good sweaters! And Old Navy has deals throughout, here’s my favorites!
And ASOS handpicked deals for this week as well. This Velvet dress is $33. WHAT! Such a good dress for Holiday.
I shouldn’t categorize this as a trend watch because it’s really just my personal preference. I am grabbing a pair of mules basically everyday lately and I see no sign of stopping! Such a convenient choice that usually goes with just about anything. Dressed up or down, but my favorite with a pair of jeans. Here’s a bunch in all price ranges!
1: A fresh take/shape in a bunch of colors! // I am a sucker for anything tomato red. // Pearl + velvet, hitting all the fall trends!
2: Perforated is so amazing for Spring and these are FRYE and on super sale. Grab for next year! // Maybe its all the Poldark I’ve been watching but these bow mules are so killer. // I always prefer a flat for this style but this mixed suede and patent is amazing.
3: Tassel loafers, so classic and these come in like 10 colors. // Lots of patent options in the same style as those Madewell faves that sold out.
4: Studded in nude (so cheap too!) // My friend has these and they’re SO pretty on. You can use that heel cap or step right on it!
5: Another perforated! Remember this post? So many of you dug the shoes (for good reason) these look pretty similar! // All leather options looking might close to Madewell.
6: Get you a pair of silver block heel booties. I don’t even care if their mules, but bonus for these!
And my latest score c/o Poppy and Dot! Sweater (similar) // Skirt // Lip is Tulle by Colour Pop
I don’t know if this trend was big in the Spring, I didn’t notice if it was, but I sure am noticing it now! Whether it’s a casual track pant or a formal tuxedo pant or something in between, this pant is so fun for Fall! So here’s 9 ways I spotted and loved it.I loved this outfit so much I had to recreate it. That doesn’t happen often for me, I am usually trying to make it my own. But this one was too good:Pretty blatant copyage here, yeah?
Rue Collective // Gucci Sweatshirt Girl // Ray Dennis // 9 to 5 Chic // Leandra Medine // Olivia Palermo // Christine of Hello Fashion Blog // Not Your Standard // Jennifer Aniston
Okay back to the trend at hand! Here are versions of the tuxedo stripe and or track pant all under $80 (most much less than that!) I think the jeans are my favorite. They’re on super sale right now, too!Cropped Black with White // Denim Tux Stripe // Adidas Popper // Black with Red + White // Floral with Black // Black with White Trouser
HOW TO WEAR IT?
- Toss on a tee and top with a blazer + booties and you’ve got the look I had to copy. My blazer is Target, and booties are Zara. If you want more sporty and less trouser these are awesome and so classic.
- 2. Wear it with an oversized sweater and sneakers for a cozy cold weather day.
- Tucked in turtleneck + slick low bun for a super polished look.
- With a crisp button up and a jean jacket on top.
- All black everything with a tee and leather jacket.
WANT HELP WITH AN OUTFIT YOU LOVE?
Did you guys know I used to be a stylist? For 10 years! I worked for a commercial photographer, as a fashion editor for a local magazine, and then freelance for awhile for various projects and friends like Say Yes! What I really love about that job is sourcing clothes and I still do a lot of that now for “work” ahem, if you can call it that. But, since I am doing it anyway, if you guys ever have a look you want to recreate, send it my way! I’d love to shop for you! Send it via email or DM too.
